Alex and I have just spent two
fulfilling, exciting, sweaty, exhausting, happy weeks here in Granada,
Nicaragua working for People Helping People Global, a micro-lending
organization that operates primarily in the surrounding barrios of the
city. By providing individuals
with the necessary capital at 0% interest in order to start new business
ventures, or to invest in existing ones, PHPG helps to generate more
economically sustainable communities in an effort to reduce the prevalence of
extreme poverty in the region.
A brief history: Spanish conqueror Francisco Hernandez de
Cordoba founded Granada in 1524, making it one of the oldest colonial
settlements in Central America. This colonial legacy persists today in the
beautiful architecture of the city:
